PHILIPPINE NATIONAL POLICE ACADEMY

Hi!
I am P/CDT Hyden Grenard Dumlao Pascual
and I welcome you to my blog!

A young and innocent child was born and raised in Abbag, Maddela, Quirino, on October 17 the year 1998. I finished my primary and secondary education at Saint Vincent School, where I developed my skills in journalism, being a consistent representative during School Press Conferences. Aside from my passion for writing, I am also a basketball enthusiast and a varsity player at my Alma Mater.

I then took up Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at Saint Louis University-Baguio in 2015. I was fortunate because I also became a varsity player in our department, the School of Engineering. After three years of college life, I've seen myself not excelling in the course that I have selected. In 2018, I was introduced to PNPA by my uncle, whom I later known as an alumnus of the prestigious Academy. Then a question came to my mind, "why don't I try taking the PNPA admission test and make a name for myself?" That became the start of chasing what my heart desired most, what I truly wanted to pursue, to be a Cadet, a refined individual.

“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

What is Cadetship Program?

"Cadetship is but a grim struggle of winning supremacy over oneself." For me, this was the first plebe knowledge I had memorized upon entering the portals of the Academy when 350 cadet aspirants took the oath to be part of PNPA Class of 2023 on May 04, 2019. It was indeed a new experience for me, the shouts coming from all angles, the unending sweat due to physical exercises, the unbeatable ten counts of the upperclassmen, and the emotions of my colleagues who were also experiencing this so-called culture shock.

With all these challenges we are facing, and for me not to mentally break down, there's this one thing that I always put on my mind, I always thought of why I entered the Academy in the first place, and that is my family.

PHASES OF CADETSHIP

The Sheep

The plebehood period is considered one of the most challenging times in a cadet's training. They must adjust to a strict military-style regimen and face various physical, mental, and emotional challenges. The training program tests the cadets' endurance, character, and commitment to their future careers as Police Commissioned Officers.

These experiences made me internalize the famous saying that our "greatest enemy is no one but ourselves." As a plebe, you don't have to worry about anything else, not your upper-class men, not what will happen to you the next day, etc. What you have to always look on to is to have the mental strength to carry on and continue following what you were told to do so. Because that is the secret to surviving being a plebe; to follow and follow and survive one day at a time, and you will not notice how fast time passes by until you become one of the upper-class Corps.

The Shearer

Third-class cadets are sophomores in civilian universities and are referred to as "yearlings" in the Academy. Upon completion of the fourth-class year, the yearling adjusts to life as an upper-class cadet. Although they are the least ranking of the upper-class cadets, they are now entitled to the privileges of being upper-class cadets. One of their responsibilities is being a "buddy" to a plebe. As buddies, they set the examples of how a cadet should behave and are responsible for ensuring that the plebes conform with the standards of cadetship.

The life of a third-class cadet is the most challenging part of cadetship because they are considered the standard of the Corps. As your rank goes up, your privileges go up, as well as your responsibilities. As a third-class cadet, you will have underclassmen in which you will teach and impart the basic skills and knowledge on how to fit in and live in the Cadet Corps. The third-class cadets will be held responsible if something happens to the fourth-class cadets, for they're their buddy and supervisor.

The Shepherd

The Second-Class Cadets are designated as the squad leaders who are in charge of looking after their squad mates' welfare. Teaching and imparting the lessons they have learned throughout their stay in the Academy. They are responsible for their subordinates' welfare, well-being, and performance. Being second-class men would focus on shadowing what the first-class men are doing, for they will soon be taking over the positions of their upperclassmen. Having been promoted also means having greater responsibility.

The Immaculate

The First-Class men, also known as the Immaculate. Being Immaculate also means having the most significant responsibilities in the Cadet Corps. They are in charge of running the Corps of Cadets and are designated Cadet Officers.

We are now imparting to the underclassmen the lessons we learned throughout our cadetship. This is the most awaited year, wherein it would be our last year as cadets before becoming public safety officers. Reaching this rank was not easy; challenges and struggles come, and the determination to finish must be strong. Being first-class men, we should be role models and excellent mentors to our underclassmen.

Empowering the Youth:
PNPA SUPPORTS MANDATORY ROTC

Why is ROTC essential to our country?

The Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) is an essential program in the Philippines for several reasons. Here are some of the critical reasons why ROTC is vital to the Philippines:

The country's national defense and security is a top priority, and ROTC plays a crucial role in building the country's defense capabilities.

The ROTC program instills a sense of patriotism and civic duty among young Filipinos. It encourages them to serve their country and contribute to the betterment of society. This helps to foster a strong sense of national pride and loyalty.

ROTC provides students with opportunities to develop leadership skills, which are valuable in both military and civilian careers. By developing these skills, students are better equipped to become influential leaders in their chosen fields.

The ROTC program strongly emphasizes discipline, self-reliance, and teamwork. By participating in the program, students learn the importance of personal responsibility and the value of working together toward a common goal. This helps build strong character traits essential for success in all areas of life.

Lastly, the ROTC program also plays a vital role in disaster response and relief efforts. ROTC cadets are often called upon to assist during natural disasters like typhoons and earthquakes and help with other community service projects.

Overall, the ROTC program is vital to the Philippines for various reasons. It helps to build the country's defense capabilities, instills a sense of patriotism and civic duty, develops leadership and character, and contributes to disaster response and relief efforts.

The Star who gives light to the Academy

He is a good leader because he has a clear and compelling vision of the future of the Academy and is able to articulate and communicate issues to others.

He is also able to understand and identify with the needs and feelings of cadets. In addition to that, he is a one-of-a-kind coach and a mentor that helps develop and support the growth and development of cadets.

A good leader is someone who possesses a combination of personal qualities and skills that enable them to effectively guide, motivate, and empower others to achieve common goals.

A true leader that is able to inspire and motivate others to achieve great things, who consistently demonstrates the qualities and behaviors that are necessary for effective leadership.

Furthermore, he is also a loving husband, and a father who is committed to his family and strives to provide love, support, and guidance to his wife and to his child.

Being a loving husband and a father is a complex and demanding role, but one that is incredibly rewarding. It involves being a support system, a role model, and a source of love and stability for one's family.

"44 Days of Faith and Valor" is a book written by retired PLTGEN Cesar Hawthorne Binag, which reflects on his personal experiences during the 44-day siege of Marawi City in the Philippines in 2017. The siege was a military conflict between government forces and Islamist militants, and PLTGEN Binag played a key role in leading the government's response.

In the book, PLTGEN Binag recounts the siege's events from his own perspective and muses on the difficulties he overcame as a commander. He emphasizes the significance of believing in one's abilities and self, as well as the necessity of endurance and tenacity in the face of difficulty. He also emphasizes the value of collaboration, effort, and communication in reaching a shared objective and describes how these virtues enabled him and his team to prevail during the siege.

PLTGEN Binag's analysis of the siege are informative and offer important lessons for anyone looking to improve their leadership, particularly in emergency situations. The book serves as a reminder of the sacrifices that military members make to serve and protect their fellow citizens and is a monument to their bravery and dedication in putting their life on the line for their country.

Every narrative in the book describes events and lessons the author has learned. From the day he joined Special Action Force until he attained the rank of a fearless soldier. He emphasized how his faith and dedication to God guided and shielded him from all the difficulties he faced throughout his journeys. Every anecdote contains a passage from the Bible that guided him in whatever he did. Prayer is a must for every trip we take. He claims in his book that it is essential that we are aware of the necessities to have with us during a war.

One of the key lessons that PNPA cadets could learn from PLTGEN Binag's account is the importance of strong leadership and a deep sense of commitment to one's duty. Throughout the book, PLTGEN Binag shows unwavering devotion to his country and his troops, even in the face of incredible danger and uncertainty. He leads from the front and inspires his troops to fight on, despite overwhelming odds.

Finally, the book underscores the role that faith and belief can play in helping people to overcome adversity. PLTGEN Binag's faith was a source of inspiration and strength for him, and it allowed him to maintain his composure and sense of purpose even in the most difficult of circumstances.

True North: Discover Your Authentic Leadership is a book by Bill George, Peter Sims, and Andrew McLean. It was first published in 2007 and is a well-regarded guide to leadership that focuses on the importance of authenticity.

To be a successful leader, a person must first understand their values, beliefs, and experiences before directing their activities by these. The authors also stress the importance of forging bonds with others and assembling a cohesive team, as well as the necessity for leaders to have a distinct mission and the guts to carry it out.

The book incorporates many case studies and interviews with outstanding leaders from a range of fields, including business, politics, and non-profits. It also draws on the writers' significant expertise. These examples clarify the ideas covered in the book and offer insightful information on what it takes to be a genuine leader.

One of the critical strengths of True North is its emphasis on the importance of self-reflection and self-awareness in leadership. The authors argue that this is a crucial step in developing the authenticity and integrity essential for effective leadership. They also emphasize the importance of balancing different aspects of one's life, including work, family, and community. They also provide practical tips and exercises to help readers reflect on their experiences and values.

"True North" highlights the importance of self-awareness in leadership. We, cadets of PNPA should strive to develop self-awareness, knowing our strengths, weaknesses, values, and purpose. By doing so, we can make better decisions, inspire others, and become effective leaders in the future.

The book also stresses the importance of authenticity and transparency in leadership. As future police officers, the cadets should prioritize building strong relationships based on trust and respect, both within the organization and with the public they serve. By being authentic and transparent, the cadets can establish credibility and inspire others to follow their lead.

"True North" encourages leaders to focus on long-term goals and values, rather than short-term gains or external validation. The cadets should prioritize the greater good of the organization and the community, rather than their individual desires or ambitions. By doing so, they can help build a better future for the organization and the country.

The book emphasizes the importance of resilience and learning from failure. The cadets will undoubtedly face setbacks and challenges in their careers, but by learning from their failures and adapting to change, they can emerge stronger and more effective leaders. By staying true to their True North and to their purpose, they can weather any storm and continue to serve with honor and integrity.
